Food and holidays

For me, part of the pleasure of a holiday is food!  Exploring markets in the sunshine, eating outdoors, finding little gems of cafes and restaurants, food I’d never eat at home in England!  This photo shows cake and coffee in a little cafe in Vienna, definitely what I needed when sightseeing!

PICT4555There are lots of posts and websites online about culinary adventures on holiday.  As always, with so much to read, where do you start?  I’d suggest finding a destination first and then reading about it’s food and restaurants.  Online magazines such as www.cntraveller.com , www.wanderlust.co.uk, and www.natgeotraveller.co.uk are a good place to wile away a few hours.

If you prefer to explore a city while there is a lot going on, try going during a food festival – for example,  Calentita, June 2016 Gibraltar.  I found http://www.tastingeurope.com/fairs-festivals/calendar a useful resource her.

For drink, you can’t beat a beer festival and these take place all over Germany plus there’s also one in Prague.  More food, wine and beer festivals happen worldwide – but you have to start somewhere!

Why not go the whole hog (pun intended) and tour around south west France – including wine tasting, oyster tasting, and truffle farm experience.  With 8 nights’ accommodation, driver/tour leader, breakfast plus 4 evening meals, plus entrance fees where necessary.  Price from £1624 per person.

For more information about any of these, just get in touch .  Hope I’ve whetted your appetite?

Want a tipple on your travels?

According to social media, its National Drink Wine Day – seems to have passed me by? Maybe its an American thing!!

Anyway, if you fancy a tipple on your travels – get in touch.

I can suggest plenty of holidays that involve lots of wine!

  • Self drive tours in Spain – an example itinerary would include Aranda de Duero, the heart of Ribera del Duera wines, followed by a couple of nights in La Rioja where you can visit wineries and lots of tastings!
  • Holidays in Italy with wine tours. Also if you’re in the Sorrento area, try some Limoncello tastings – yummy
  • Walking or cycling holidays in Spain, Italy, France,
  • Georgia, Argentina. Bet you didn’t think of these last 2 countries for wine-tasting holidays.  Georgia has a long wine-making tradition and here you can sample local cuisine as well.  An Argentinian itinerary can take you to Iguassu Falls as well as wineries and gauchos!
  • Explore the wine routes in South Africa. The stunning area along the coast from Cape Town has some beautiful vineyards. Combine this with whale-watching (in season) and the Cape’s garden route for a spectacular holiday
  • Further away, Hawke’s Bay is pretty well regarded as the “food bowl” of New Zealand and there are numerous ways you can nibble and sup on the best of Hawke’s Bay. One of the best places to start is at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market which brings together numerous artisan sellers every Sunday. Winery lunches are a must on any visit to Hawke’s Bay
  • Australian wines are well-regarded these days – vineyards are located mainly in southern Australia, although there are some in Western Australia’s Margaret River.

Sunshine, relaxation and wine – what better combination for a holiday?  To chat about these and other wine-related or culinary themes for your next holiday, call or email Olein

Travel trends for 2016 – South America

It’s the time of year when we get so many articles and blogs predicting where everyone will travel this year!  Over the next few postings, I’ll share some ideas with you.

BA are starting direct flights to Costa Rica and Peru in May, so these two destinations will now become easier to visit.  Costa Rica is fabulous for eco-friendly holidays, tropical beaches, volcanoes – both active and dormant.  Watch the rainforest as you zip-line through the trees.  Maybe good to combine this with a holiday to the USA or Mexico.

Peru has been popular for many years, mainly due to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.  You can either follow this trail by foot or by rail.  While in South America, (which is my tip for the fastest growing destination for UK tourists in 2016), there is so much more you can add to your trip.  Brazil has the Olympics, but also the Amazon and Iguassu Falls.  Bolivia (in easy reach from Peru) has Lake Titicaca.  Chile has the Andes and a whole multitude of different landscapes.  From the Ecuador coast, you can explore the Galapagos.  Much more – just ask me for more South American Ideas

Christmas ideas for staff

Hi.  How are you rewarding your staff this Christmas?  A bottle of wine or chocolates?  How about something that will make them realise how much you appreciate them?

I’ve got plenty of suggestions for you:christmas-card-574742_640

  • Makeover and photoshoot
  • Boutique hotel and deluxe B&B break
  • Spa days
  • Comedy night experience
  • Meerkat experience (the real ones, not the ones off the TV!)
  • Afternoon tea
  • Race day experience and behind the scenes

Maybe these ideas would be good for some teambuilding as well.

  • 007 powerboat adventure day.
  • Paintballing
  • Abseiling
  • Driving experiences – a wide variety of cars and other vehicles

Give your staff something to remember and incentivise them for the coming year.

Many more experiences available.  This is just a small selection

WTM Global Trends

According to the latest report, released to coincide with the World Travel Market in London this week, the big trend in Europe is for Hipster Holidays. The rise of AirBnb helps here, but also these travellers like vegan restaurants, pop up cafes, independent shops and craft galleries.  Many European cities have hipster neighbourhoods – namely Berlin, Budapest and Riga.

Also consider visiting Barcelona, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Madrid and Amsterdam.  If you don’t want to AirBnb, I can help you find boutique or quirky hotels in the right neighbourhoods, advise on what to see.  Maybe a foodie tour of a city, rather than the historic views.  Use public transport or bikes, rather than guided tours.  Lots of ideas to make your holiday trendy!
